What a Smile is Worth
Elaine’s apprehension of the dentist’s chair started at an early age and played a large part in shaping her longstanding views on dental health.
“There was no way I was going to go to the dentist and open my mouth. I didn’t want to be judged in that way,” said Elaine. “I’ve had a fear of dentists and that fear turned into embarrassment.”
Quickly, she developed several tricks to avoid judgement from others.
“You don’t open your mouth. You cover your mouth. You look down,” Elaine said quietly. “You never look anybody in the eye.”
Even in her marriage, Elaine characterized herself as introverted, while her husband was outgoing. “I was always on the sidelines.”
“After he passed away I knew I had to do something. I knew I was not going to be able to go out and meet people and make new friends,” said Elaine. “I guess you can say that him passing away was kind of my rock bottom.”

Three words from her daughter changed her life: “Go for it.” It was the green light she needed.
“My daughter went to the appointment with me and encouraged me the whole way,” said Elaine.
Stepping into the ClearChoice Austin center was a first big victory for Elaine. She found a compassionate team who took the task of addressing her fears seriously.
“Dr. Pharr always made me feel comfortable and like I was his only patient that day. He spent a lot of time trying to get my smile just right. He made me feel special.”
